Any good checklists or tips for interviewing childcare providers?

Not daycare, as we have a center picked out.  I'm desperately hoping to go the other route (in-home, ours or theirs).  Nerve-wracking to find someone on the internet that we have no personal connection to!  Thanks!

Re: Any good checklists or tips for interviewing childcare providers?

  • I worked as a nanny for a while, so I have some experience with what a good childcare provider should offer.  First, they need to tell you their availability and how much notice they can give you if they aren't available.  Second, you need to know what they have available for activities.  If you are taking LO to their house, what kind of toys do they have?  Is there a TV in the playroom that may be on?  Is it child-proofed?  Is there a safe place for naps?  Are they ok with following your routine (feedings, changings, etc.)?  Will they have access to transportation in the event of an emergency?

If someone gives you a bad feeling, don't be afraid to say no.  Intuition about someone is usually right.  If their way of doing things doesn't click with you, don't hire them.  There are plenty of people out there looking for a job, so don't be afraid to be picky about who you hire.  Also, it's usually a good idea to have a 'trial day' where you are present while you watch them watch your child.  It's a good way as well to walk them through what you usually do with LO as consistancy is important.

    Best of luck to you!
